Chenille Abrams' career as a makeup artist is taking off when she meets pro football player Brayden Carpenter. Chenille is up-front with Brayden from the beginning: she's not out to be an NFL wife; she wants to be her own woman. After a storybook wedding, the couple settles down in Dallas, and soon Chenille is expecting a baby. Tragedy strikes when their son is diagnosed in utero with a heart defect that will require surgery immediately after birth. Although the surgery goes well, Quincy's health issues are complex, and Chenille soon finds herself consumed with motherhood at the expense of her career. Brayden's success on the football field leads to extensive demands on his time, leaving Chenille feeling isolated and unhappy. When Chenille's dissatisfaction reaches its boiling point, the consequences could destroy their family. Warren (The Pastor's Husband, 2016) explores the inner workings of a marriage between two talented and ambitious people thrust into a series of difficult situations. The twists and turns will keep readers engaged, and the ending highlights Chenille's kindness and willingness to forgive. Faith plays an important part in the story and serves as a guide for both Chenille and Brayden as they navigate their lives. Fans of ReShonda Tate Billingsley and Victoria Christopher Murray will find familiar characters and themes, but Warren's novel will appeal to any reader who enjoys stories about couples in crisis.
